It's been a great weekend

First let me say how glad I am to be 41!  I did not like turning or being 40.  For a whole year every time my birthday came up, people would say, "oh you hit the big 4-0."  It got old.  Turning 41 was very uneventful and I didn't have a lot of expectations either, it just felt a lot less stressful to me.  So my birthday on Friday, was very low key.  We just hung out mostly.  The girls wanted to make me a cake so I let them.  I helped a bit with the mixing and baking part - mostly just giving direction; but when it came to the icing and decorating, they were completely on their own.  I even headed outdoors to go keep Bill company and as I was going, I heard Danielle say to Michelle, "she's leaving so she want say to us, 'no girls, don't do it that way.'"  I started howling because she was so right.  Letting them do their thing in the kitchen really stretches me.  Anyway, it was quite a cake when done.  Every cake topper we had was on it - Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Tinker Belle, Big Bird, Oscar, Cookie Monster, Ernie, Thomas the Tank Engine, and several others as well.  It was actually pretty cute.  We ate hot dogs for supper and had cake and ice cream and I opened their presents.  After that we watched a few episodes of Tales of Avonlea Season 1 that we had rented.  It was just a nice day.

Today for Mother's Day was much the same.  After church we had BLT's and Bill and I took our usual Sunday afternoon nap.  We didn't have church tonight so when we got up, he and I went to work on some plant stuff as it is propagation time.  Then tonight we went to our favorite Chinese buffet for dinner.  The girls just have me the Mother's Day gift that they made me.  It is a beaded set of earrings and matching necklace that it quite pretty and will match a couple of my outfits, so pretty neat.

Now everyone but me has gone to bed but I just want to say I have the best husband and kids in the universe!  I love you guys thanks for blessing me so much!

Update on chickens

Sorry that I haven't posted lately.  Man have we been busy and their is really no end in site.  I thought some of you might like an update on the chickens.  Well they are 5 weeks old and about the size of pigeons.  All eight of them are still alive, well and doing great!  We still don't know which ones are hens and which are roosters and I keep getting conflicting information of how old they are when the gender characteristics show up for sure.  Somewhere between 4-6 months is the best I know, so we still have a ways to go.  A few of the chicks are beginning to grow their comb though so that is pretty neat.  We finally were able to start keeping them outside sort of.  At night we still put them in the brooder which is a big plastic storage bin and keep them in our utility room.  Then we have a large cage that we are keeping them in right now in the day time.  Sometime soon Bill is going to have to find time to build a chicken coop, but the poor guy is just slammed between church and our plant nursery business.

We had our first big plant sale this past Saturday and though it was a bit disappointing due to getting rained out for half of it, we still did pretty well.  The crowds were way down because of the impending storm and then the four hour sale was cut down to a two hour sale, but we were steadily busy the whole two hours and we learned a lot as well.  So all in all it was a very positive experience.

I am busy trying to wrap up school for the year and trying to help as much as possible with the plants, plus general familly, church and life stuff.  We certainly are not lacking for things to fill our time.

Whew!

We made it through the weekend.  The other two eggs did not hatch so we finished with the eight chicks and all seem healthy and are doing well.  Our biggest challenge with them over the weekend was being gone so much and having to keep our cats locked up/out of the house while we were not their to monitor them.  I really don't think the cats will bother them but with them so small we didn't want to take a chance.  When we are there the cats seem totally disinterested, but the question is, when the people are away, will the cats play?

We are all taking the day off today and and resting up.  It was a great weekend but nevertheless it was exhausting.  We gave away a few hundred New Testaments and thousands of gospel tracts, along with helium balloons, pens, and gum. We didn't get to talk in depth with as many people this year but we did plant a bunch of seeds.

Okay I think we are at the end of the hatch

Technically we still have two eggs that haven't hatched but they are not show any signs of hatching either.  We will give them until tomorrow and if they haven't at least pipped the shell we will consider them duds.

We have 8 little chickens!  One of the Araucana's has hatched and it is a little black chick.  All the rest are yellow with varying degrees of black markings.  So far 4 have been moved to the brooder and 4 are still in the incubator drying and will be moved tomorrow.  Yes we have named them all so here they are in order of birth:
Little Bit
Buddy
Hope (who is just fine by the way)
Chicken Joe (Think of the movie - Surf's Up)
Pippi
Joy
BB
Winnie (the black araucana)

Now of course the names may change when we discover the true gender of the chicks which won't be till they are several months old and their combs and waddles develop.

Now can I say, as exciting as this has been, we are TIRED!!!  Who knew hatching chickens could be so exhausting, lol.

The kids are having a blast though, playing with the 4 that are in the brooder.  It is still pretty neat and novel.

I will post again if either of the other eggs do hatch and I will put up more pics as we go, but for now my posting will sloow down.  We have an huge outreach event all this weekend starting tomorrow so I will not be around to post much until Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Good morning!

We welcomed the 7th chick just a few minutes ago, we thought it might be the last one and decided to name it, "Omega".  But then I decided to do a quick check of the other four eggs to see if they showed any signs of hatching and the last one I turned over, a green, one is about to hatch!  That totally surprised us and filled us with new excitement.  The green eggs are Araucanas so it would be great to get at least one.  Supposedly the others are a cross between Rhode Island Reds and Orpingtons.
